Horrifying testimonies of immigrants arrested in Libya and raped

"I escaped from a nightmare to hell," with this phrase, Aisha described the story of her arrest in Libya, after escaping from a difficult life in Guinea in an attempt to reach Europe to find a better life.

Aisha escaped from Guinea in 2019 from her husband's family and neighbors who thought she was barren or a witch because she had a miscarriage five times, while suffering from diabetes, she told AFP.

The young woman, with a degree, gave up on gossip and family problems, so she "just wanted to disappear" from her country. She contacted an old friend of hers who managed to build a life in Libya, who gave her some money so she could join her.

On her sufferings in Libya, Aisha said: "I have never seen the country. Since I arrived I have been imprisoned in a room where I was like a slave."

She also noted that she was forced to have sex with customers without any monetary compensation, and she did not see the landlady until she brought her food, she said.

"I lost my life"
Ayesha told about some of what she experienced when she was still shaking with fear, and says she prefers not to remember anything.

As for the way she escaped, she explained that a lobby man had rescued her after 3 months of torment, from the woman who exploited her, after threatening the latter and taking out Aisha, handing her 300 lobby dinars (about 55 euros).

He also put her on a bus to Tunisia, where she is today trying to return to a normal life by learning informatics. After receiving treatment for her diabetes there she was able to give birth at the end of the previous year to her child bearing the name Murphy.

She also clarified that the dream of emigrating to Europe still exists, but she completely refuses to return to Libya.

The UN is fighting sexual crimes

In 2020, the UN decided to deploy defense agencies to deal with sexual crimes committed in detention centers and against immigrants in Libya.

On June 12, a record number of migrants were seized in the Mediterranean and more than 1,000 of them were transferred to police stations in Libya, according to the UN High Commissioner for Migrants.

Many immigrants say that Libya, which has become a crossroads towards Europe since 2014, is in fact a country of violence, torture and abduction of illegal immigrants.
