A column of Malian military and Warner PMC was ambushed by flip-flop wearing Tuareg Azawad militia on July 27, 2024, in northern Mali near the village of Tinzaouaten on the Algerian border.
Estimates of the number killed (Malian and Russian) range widely (as high as 80) but video evidence supports at least one dozen and possible as many as 20.
Notables killed in the attack include the Wagner senior commander Anton Yelizarov (callsign "Lotus") who led them in the capture of Bakhmut, and the founder and administrator of the TG Channel "Grey Zone", Nikita Fedyanin.
Note: Mali was one of the last refuges for what remained of Wagner after their attempted coup on Moscow. It is possible that this defeat spells the end of Wagner as anything resembling a paramilitary organization.
