Israel: Cyber attack thwarted during Zelensky speech

The Ukrainian president spoke to Israel’s lawmakers via Zoom. Israel has yet to assign blame.

Israel’s Knesset reported on Sunday that during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s virtual address to the nation’s lawmakers, several cyber attack attempts were identified and thwarted.

According to the Israeli parliament’s spokesperson unit, the attack attempts were aimed at the its communication infrastructure, in order to disrupt the broadcast, which was carried out via Zoom.

No individual or organization has yet to assume responsibility, and Israel did not assign blame.

“It I possible that this time it was the Russians who were looking for a way to keep Zelensky from delivering his address in Israel – and what is more convenient than an DDoS attack on the very infrastructure used to broadcast this address,” commented Israeli cyber resilience expert, Einat Meyron.

“Many Israeli websites are constantly enduring cyber attack attempts from various actors with various interests, and this is something we cannot take lightly. It is also important to remember that these attacks might be smoke screens meant to provide cover for deeper, wider attacks,” added Meyron.

Last week, several Israeli government websites experienced a brief, yet extensive, DDoS attack. The government refrained from pointing any fingers, but many experts believe that Iran was responsible.
