Shiite Sheikh Muhammad Ali Al-Husseini, Secretary-General of the Arab Islamic Council in Lebanon, congratulates the people of Israel on the holiday of Passover and the exodus from slavery to freedom, and writes:
"With all tolerance, I wish my Jewish cousins who follow the Torah of Moses a happy Passover and a blessed Eid."
On the anniversary of the Exodus of the Israelites from Egyptian slavery.
We hope that peace, security and stability will prevail on earth and that wars will end."
His post received about 300,000 views and hundreds of comments, including accusations of treason and Zionism.
One of the responses caught my attention.
Someone quoted verse 51 of Surah Al-Ma'idah - Parashat Al-Shulhan:
"O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as saints, some of them as saints, and those of you who worship them فَإِنَّهُ مِنْهُمْ..."
"O you who believe! Do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies.
They are allies of each other. And whoever of you takes them as allies – then he is one of them... "
This verse from the Quran is often used in a political or religious context to express opposition to ties with non-Muslims, especially when it comes to Jews or Christians.
This verse is very popular in Salafi discourse, because Salafism emphasizes a clear separation between Muslims and non-Muslims, and a strict attitude towards ties perceived as "loyalty" or "collaboration" with other groups, especially Jews and Israelis.
A Passover blessing by a Shiite cleric is seen by these Muslims as a form of "approach" or "alliance" with the Jews. In their eyes, this is considered crossing a religious or political boundary.
Sheikh Al-Husseini is known for his moderate and open approach, which supports peace, tolerance, and interfaith coexistence.
I wish there were many more sheikhs like him.
In Arabic they say: Allah will multiply people like Him - Allah will multiply people like Him!
May we have good news 🙏
May our kidnapped people be freed and returned to the bosom of their families.🎗
Happy Holidays🌹
