A senior Hezbollah official long seen as one of the group’s most powerful behind-the-scenes figures has reportedly stepped down, marking a rare high-level departure within the Iran-backed terror organization.
According to multiple reports, Wafiq Safa, the long-time head of Hezbollah’s Liaison and Coordination Unit and the key figure managing the group’s ties with Lebanese state institutions, has resigned from his post. This would be the first known exit of an official of his rank following Hezbollah’s heavy losses in last year’s war with Israel.
Sources familiar with the matter say Safa has been replaced by Hussein Abdullah, previously the group’s southern commander, suggesting an internal restructuring driven by wartime failures and operational setbacks. Hezbollah itself has issued no official statement explaining the move.
Safa was widely viewed as a central power broker inside Hezbollah, particularly in coordinating security, judicial, and political matters between the organization and the Lebanese state. His reported departure may signal deeper changes underway within the group’s leadership as it reassesses its strategy following the conflict.
