The US is reportedly holding closed-door negotiations with Denmark regarding a major expansion of the American military presence in Greenland, according to a report by the BBC.
The report states that Washington is planning to establish three new military bases in southern Greenland aimed at monitoring growing Russian and Chinese activity across the North Atlantic and Arctic regions.
The discussions reportedly focus on strengthening surveillance, missile detection, naval monitoring, and strategic Arctic operations as competition between the US, Russia, and China intensifies in the far north.
Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has become increasingly important due to its geographic position between North America and Europe, as well as its proximity to Arctic shipping routes and military corridors.
