Immigrants from Iraq, most of them from the Kurdish region, are making international headlines on their way to the European Union due to rising tensions between Belarus and Poland.
The question is why young Kurdish people are risking their lives on the way to the European Union precisely when the Kurdish region is considered relatively stable from a security and economic point of view.
First, the phenomenon of immigration of young Kurds is not new and began in 2014 against the background of the crisis between the provincial government and the central government in Baghdad.
The trend has accelerated recently due to mistrust about future life in Iraq. In addition, sources in the Kurdish region claim that the corona year was devastating and many of the young people there lost their livelihoods and now prefer to try their luck in Europe. To all these must of course be added the widespread corruption in Kurdistan that benefits especially with small groups "close to the plate" and the political division within the region.
