A resurfaced video shared by Elon Musk on X is reigniting debate over voter ID laws in the US, spotlighting sharply different perspectives on whether such requirements are discriminatory.
The clip, originally filmed in 2016 by conservative filmmaker Ami Horowitz, contrasts two sets of interviews. In the first, mostly white, liberal interviewees argue that voter ID laws are racist, claiming Black Americans lack access to government IDs, DMVs, or even the internet.
In the second half, Horowitz interviews Black residents in East Harlem, many of whom say they already have IDs, know how to obtain them, and find the earlier assumptions offensive, condescending, or detached from reality.
The video is anecdotal and openly framed as a social experiment, but it does not fabricate quotes or scenes. It presents real interviews and highlights a gap between elite progressive narratives and the lived experiences voiced by Black Americans themselves.
