Humanitarian Crisis in Syria

Some 13.4 million people need aid across Syria, said UN Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffith, who stressed the importance of aid to Syria "to prevent the loss of an entire generation."

It happened at the end of his seven-day visit to Syria, Lebanon, and Turkey. According to a statement issued by the Ministry for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Griffith's first stop - during his first official visit to the region since taking office - was in the Syrian capital, Damascus. Griffiths stressed during his meetings with the regime's secretary of state and his deputy, "the need to expand the humanitarian approach, protect civilians and help the Syrians be optimistic."

"I met people in Aleppo whose lives were turned upside down by the long-running Syrian crisis when everyone expressed their need to feel safe," Griffiths said.

He added that they particularly sought access to basic services, such as health, water, electricity, and fuel heating services in the winter, in addition to educating children, and working for young people, "noting that they" want support for a better future. "

The statement said Griffiths met (in the Lebanese capital, Beirut) with donors to discuss the situation in Syria, where he expressed "concern about the acute fuel crisis in Lebanon, which threatens to undermine the availability of health services and safe drinking water."

The statement said the emergency aid coordinator had visited the last stop in Turkey and was holding constructive meetings in the capital, Ankara, with a spokesman for the Turkish president and deputy foreign minister.

Griffith ended his visit to Gaziantep, where he listened to UN agencies, national and international NGOs, Syrian refugees living in Turkey, and members of the Turkish host community.

According to OCHA data, "Every year the UN sends 1,000 food trucks, medicines and other life-saving aid to the millions of people in Syria who are affected by the hostilities and need help."

According to UN data, some 13.4 million people need assistance across Syria, where the UN and its partners have so far received about 27 percent of the total funding required under the $ 4.2 billion humanitarian response program for Syria in 2021.
