Senior political sources tell Israel daily "Israel Hayom" that President Donald Trump is not expecting Israel to pull back from the areas it took in southern Syria after the fall of Assad.
The clarification comes as Israel’s political-security leadership toured the buffer zone yesterday.
Ten days ago, after his meeting with Trump at the White House, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa conditioned any future arrangement with Israel on a full Israeli withdrawal from the zones now under IDF control. In interviews to American media, al-Sharaa even claimed that Washington supports his position.
“To reach a final agreement, Israel must return to the lines that existed before December 8. The United States stands with us in this negotiation, and many international actors support our viewpoint. Today we learned that Mr. Trump also supports our position and will push as quickly as possible to reach a solution,” al-Sharaa told the Washington Post.
