As the conflict in Israel rages on following the devastating events of October 7th, the nation’s focus has been firmly fixed on security and survival.
Yet, amid the chaos and uncertainty, another, quieter crisis is unfolding in the homes of Israel’s elderly. These are the men and women who have lived through wars, survived the Holocaust, and built the state of Israel, but who now find themselves isolated and alone in their twilight years. For them, the war is not just a threat to physical safety but a source of profound emotional and psychological anguish.
Volunteerism, often seen as a civic duty in times of peace, has taken on a new urgency in this time of war. The nonprofit organization Adopt-A-Safta is leading the charge, rallying volunteers to bring comfort and connection to the elderly who are otherwise cut off from the world. The importance of this work cannot be overstated.
