Congregation in Puerto Rico mosque cheers during Pro-Palestinian sermon at Mamdani visit
Let that sink in: New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani visited the Centro Islámico del Caribe in San Juan on Friday, where he was met with cheers of “Allahu Akbar” from the congregation.
Mamdani attended Jummah prayers and participated in a food distribution event for the annual Somos Day of Service, helping provide meals to local residents. During the visit, he was joined by prominent Muslim figures, including his attorney Ali Najmi, NYC Council Member Yusef Salaam, Assemblymember Charles Fall, State Senator Robert Jackson, and NYIC Director Murad Awawdeh.
An imam delivering the sermon explicitly mentioned Palestine, stating that any khutbah that does not address the issue is “short, it is not full.” He emphasized, “This is not about being anti-Jewish. This is about people who lost their land, who are oppressed.” The imam continued, urging optimism among the Muslim community, noting the growing global support for Palestinians after 75 years of conflict.
