The US has announced a strike on the Shahid Bagheri, Iran’s first drone-carrier warship operated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy. The vessel was designed to launch and operate drones (UAVs), helicopters, and missiles, serving as a floating base to project Iranian power beyond its shores.
The Shahid Bagheri represents Iran’s attempt to build a cheaper, asymmetric alternative to a traditional aircraft carrier. Rather than deploying advanced fighter jets, the platform focuses on swarms of drones and missile systems—tools that can threaten regional shipping lanes, US naval forces, and nearby states without the massive cost of a full carrier strike group.
If confirmed, the strike would mark a significant escalation, directly targeting one of Tehran’s most high-profile naval assets and a centerpiece of its strategy to extend operational reach into the Persian Gulf and beyond.
