Israeli Opposition Leader Rejects Call for Protest-Free Independence Day

Opposition leader Yair Lapid rejected an appeal by Transportation Minister Miri Regev that demonstrations against the Israeli government’s judicial overhaul be suspended during Israel’s upcoming Independence Day.

“We will not pretend that we are celebrating together and that everything is fine while the government is tearing apart the people of Israel and erasing democracy, and we will not sit back and watch another embarrassing show of flattery for the Netanyahu family,” Lapid said in a statement.

Government and opposition officials are throwing their support behind an agreement to suspend protests on Memorial Day, which is the day before Independence Day. Many Israelis visit the graves of family and friends killed in the line of duty or in terror attacks.

Regev, who is in charge of this year’s Independence Day celebrations, refused to support the Memorial Day initiative unless the opposition agreed to also freeze protests on Independence Day. She also asked Lapid to sign a joint declaration to that effect.

Memorial Day begins at sundown on April 24.

The governing coalition’s judicial reforms have deeply divided Israeli society.

Legislation advancing through the Knesset would primarily alter the way judges are appointed and removed, give the Knesset the ability to override certain High Court rulings, restrict the ability of judges to apply standards of “reasonableness,” and change the way legal advisors are appointed to government ministries.

Supporters of the legal overhaul say they want to end years of judicial overreach while opponents describe the proposals as anti-democratic.

On Thursday morning, the Knesset passed the Impeachment Law which restricts the ability for a sitting prime minister to be removed from office. Critics say the law was tailored to protect Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu amid speculation that the Supreme Court or the Attorney General may order Netanyahu to recuse himself from office during his corruption trial due to conflicts of interest.
