Erdogan to establish a "new Gaza"?
Doron Peskin, Middle East Expert 08.05.2022
The plan presented last week by Turkish President Erdogan for the "voluntary return" of 1 million Syrian refugees to their homeland raises concerns.
According to the plan, the Syrian refugees in Turkey will be transferred to the area of ??the Syrian city of Idlib, which already has a population of about 3.5 million. The Idlib region in northwestern Syria is almost the last stronghold outside Assad's control and is controlled by Turkish militias.
Sources in the Syrian opposition claim that Erdogan's plan will lead to the creation of a "new Gaza Strip" between Turkey and Syria. "The new Strip" is marked in green on the map between Syria and Turkey.
