Syrian sources report that Iyad Kamal, known as "Moro" died today after a 10-day hospitalization at 601 Hospital in Damascus. He was hospitalized after unknown individuals assassinated him in the Beit Jen area of Damascus.
Morro was the commander of the Hermon sector on behalf of the rebels, before the area fell to Assad in 2018.
In the past, it was reported here from Syrian sources that he used to visit Israel frequently and coordinate activities with the IDF, as part of the medical and humanitarian assistance that Israel provided to the residents of southern Syria (IDF "Good Neighborhood" project).
After the occupation of the area by Assad in 2018, his status vis-à-vis the Syrian regime was also regulated. It seems that there were still some open ends left ... that eventually led to his death.
He joins the several top commanders who have been assassinated since the beginning of 2022, a phenomenon in which 250 top officers of the various militias in Syria were assassinated. It is dangerous to be an officer in Syria.
