Middle East expert Moshe Reuveni argues that Israel’s war against Iran and its terrorist proxies is not merely a regional conflict, but a front-line battle on behalf of the entire Western world.
Reuveni describes Israel as the “iron wall” standing between radical Islam and the democratic West. He cites warnings that Israel is only the first target, while Europe and the United States are the ultimate objective. In this view, Israel is the “appetizer,” while the West is the “main course.”
He contrasts Francis Fukuyama’s prediction that ideological conflict would decline after the collapse of the Soviet Union with Samuel Huntington’s warning of an approaching clash between civilizations. Reuveni argues that the September 11 attacks proved Huntington correct and exposed the mistaken belief that instability in the Middle East was primarily caused by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Iran, he says, now stands at the center of the radical Islamist threat. Its nuclear program, ballistic missiles, drones and terrorist proxies endanger not only Israel but also Europe, the United States and moderate Arab countries. Recent Iranian attacks and threats against regional states demonstrate that Tehran’s ambitions extend far beyond Israel.
