Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps opened fire on a commercial tanker near Oman after Tehran again declared the Strait of Hormuz closed, in a sharp escalation of the maritime standoff. The vessel and crew were unharmed, but the incident signals growing risk to global shipping routes.
Two Iranian gunboats approached the tanker about 20 nautical miles off Oman and fired without provocation, according to maritime authorities. The attack comes amid confusion over Iran’s shifting stance on the strait, after it claimed to reopen it—only to threaten closure again in response to the US-led naval blockade.
With US forces enforcing the blockade and Iran asserting control over passage, the situation is rapidly deteriorating, raising fears of broader confrontation in one of the world’s most vital oil transit corridors.
