YONI BEN MENACHEM -- Senior officials in Jerusalem: Lebanese army's announcement on completion of first phase of weapons collection program does not reflect reality.
The Lebanese army announced today that the goals of the first phase of the arms restriction plan in the south of the country have been achieved, and that it is prepared to move on to the second phase of the plan.
The Lebanese army's announcement emphasized that this phase included expanding the operational presence in the south of the country, securing vital areas, and establishing control over most of the sectors south of the Litani. However, it clarified that the activity continues, among other things, for the purpose of handling unexploded ordnance and tunnels, "with the aim of preventing armed groups from irreversibly rebuilding their capabilities."
In a response published by the Prime Minister's Office to the announcement, it was stated that "the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon, which was brokered by the US, clearly states that Hezbollah must fully disarm. This is a necessary step for the security of Israel and the future of Lebanon.
