At the center of the political crisis is the economy — not because Britain has fallen into a dramatic recession, but because many voters feel their lives simply are not improving. 

Official figures show the British economy grew by 1.4% in 2025, but growth sharply slowed toward the end of the year, with almost no expansion in the final quarter. Construction declined, business confidence weakened, and forecasts for 2026 were cut. 

For ordinary Britons, the real issue is simple: life still feels expensive.
