YONI BEN MENACHEM -- Hamas’ military wing has appointed a new commander for its Gaza Brigade as the group braces for a possible IDF takeover of Gaza City.
Senior Israeli security sources confirmed that Mohand Rajab has been named to replace Az al-Din al-Haddad as head of the brigade. The move comes after a wave of Israeli targeted killings eliminated much of Hamas’ senior military leadership, forcing the group to reorganize.
Rajab, about 46, is considered one of Hamas’ “shadow figures,” with few public details known about his personal life to shield him from Israeli intelligence. Sources in Gaza say he has been part of Hamas’ Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades for many years, serving in the intelligence division — responsible for gathering information, analysis, and planning operations. Over time, he rose through the ranks of the Gaza Brigade, playing a central role in operational planning until his appointment as commander.
Beyond his military activity, Rajab has also been active in Gaza’s religious and social life, known as the “emir of the Tel al-Islam mosques” in Gaza City’s Tel al-Hawa neighborhood. His presence in community and religious circles strengthens his influence and bolsters his reputation as a leader both in combat and in society.
