One of the most horrifying sites in Yemen under Houthi rule is a secret prison nicknamed “The White House”, located in the city of Abs, Hajjah province.
Once a modern private home owned by Ahmed Al-Jabali, former deputy governor, it was seized by the Houthis after he fled and turned into an unmarked prison.
Men and women—mostly from Abs and nearby Harad—are detained there. They endure horrific torture including nail removal, electric shocks, hangings, starvation, being kept in pitch-black cells, and for women, repeated sexual assault. Some women, even girls as young as 14, are kidnapped and falsely accused of prostitution, often just for walking to school or for being from poor, powerless families.
Torture and rape are not just tools of interrogation—they're used for revenge, domination, and crushing any opposition. The prison is controlled by Salman Al-Hadawi, known as “Abu Firdus,” a relative of Houthi leaders and the security chief for Abs and Harad. He personally participates in the abuse, particularly against women, often dragging them out of cells at night for what he calls “interrogation.”
