Lebanon’s Supreme Defense Council issued a sharp warning to Hamas on Friday, urging the group and other factions not to carry out attacks against Israel from Lebanese territory.
The statement came after recent rocket launches toward Israel prompted Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon and Beirut’s southern suburbs.
The Council, which convened at the Baabda Palace under the leadership of President Joseph Aoun, emphasized the need to prevent any group “from undermining Lebanon’s national security and stability,” adding that “preserving Lebanon’s territorial integrity is of the highest importance.”
Following a full review of recent security developments, the Council recommended that the government issue a formal warning to Hamas. It also called for the implementation of the “strictest legal and operational measures to completely halt any action that violates Lebanon’s sovereignty.”
The statement further noted that legal proceedings would begin early next week against those arrested in connection with rocket launches on March 22 and 28. All individuals found involved in the attacks, based on the investigations, will be prosecuted.
