CHICAGO, June 15, 1933 - A more tolerant attitude on the part of the Nazi government toward the Jews of Germany is expected by Professor William E. Dodd, newly-appointed ambassador to Germany, he indicated here in an interview with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
Professor Dodd declined to make a direct statement regarding his attitude toward the persecution of the Jews in Germany, declaring that he was "committed to be careful" in his public utterances until he had consulted with President Roosevelt and the State Department.
He added, however, "Of course, you know the attitude of any American scholar".
The new ambassador said he had discussed the situation with a number of people, including prominent Jewish leaders, and had found them "fine and reasonable about it.
"The worst is past," Professor Dodd declared, "and things are going to get better right along".
