The situation in Syria and in particular the Turkish moves regarding the matter as well as yesterday’s trilateral meeting between Egypt, Greece and Cyprus dominated the meeting between President Isaac Herzog and President Nicos Christodoulides of Cyprus in Nicosia.
The meeting, after which no statements were made, took place in a particularly warm atmosphere and despite the presence of a few dozen protesters outside the Presidential Palace who had responded to the calls of the Communist Party of Cyprus AKEL to demonstrate against his presence on the island.
A government source told TPS-IL that the discussion focused on the results of yesterday’s trilateral meeting with Egypt and Greece in Cairo and its outcomes, but what prevailed was the issue of Turkey and how to better coordinate the two countries given what Ankara is attempting to do in order to create a new fait accompli after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad. Also discussed was the issue of humanitarian aid to Gaza in which Cyprus is pursuing an important role.
Interestingly, after President Herzog, the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, whose visit had been kept a secret, arrived at the Presidential Palace.
