According to The Wall Street Journal, US planners are looking beyond a possible takeover of Iran’s Kharg Island and considering the seizure of additional territory along the Strait of Hormuz.

Analysts identify Abu Musa and the Greater and Lesser Tunb islands as the most likely targets because of their strategic position near one of the world’s most important shipping routes. 

American officials reportedly warn that US troops stationed on the islands would remain vulnerable to Iranian missile and drone attacks. However, retired Gen. Frank McKenzie, the former head of CENTCOM, told CBS that possession of Iranian territory could provide Washington with a powerful bargaining chip in future negotiations with Tehran.
