He witnessed the book burning of 1933 and Kristallnacht in 1938, leaving Germany for the United Kingdom on the Kindertransport a few months later. Ther,e he joined the British army and fought the Germans. Both the United Kingdom and France honored him for rescuing wounded soldiers under fire. After the war, as an intelligence officer, he interrogated the Nazi Foreign Minister Joachim Ribbentrop.
