More than a decade ago, Aviv Kochavi, as head of the operations division at the General Staff, noticed the large gap between the quality of special units' special operations (mm) performance and the cumbersome capabilities of infantry brigades that have difficulty exposing enemies hiding in homes, behind thickets, and in tunnels.
Ten years later, as chief of staff, he came up with the idea of upgrading the quaility of infantry brigades that maneuver deep into enemy territory by setting up a special unit to develop classified means and methods, called the "Ghost Unit" (888).
The General Staff formulated a concept for a secret Pillars whose main purpose will be to increase integration in all the various dimensions with an emphasis on the connection between ground forces and the air force. The mission was assigned in April 2019 to Ami Bitton, who previously commanded a paratroop patrol, the 202nd Battalion and the 'Cherry Undercover Unit'.
At the beginning of the unit's establishment, Bitton was introduced to the most classified technological and intelligence capabilities the IDF has to offer for ground maneuvering. Future action. Anything that allows an enemy to be quickly exposed and destroyed.
