The Moroccan army has officially announced the purchase of the Barak MX air defense and missile system, developed by Israel Aerospace Industries.
The value of the contract is $500 million, which confirms Morocco’s progress in the field of advanced technological defense and reflects the deepening of military cooperation between it and Israel.
Barak MX is considered one of the most prominent modern air defense systems, and is known for its ability to intercept a wide range of aerial threats, including ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and armed drones.
This system is characterized by the fact that it can be configured to meet the specific needs of national defense systems, providing short, medium and long-range coverage of up to 150 kilometers. It also combines advanced radar technology capable of identifying multiple targets in complex environments, and modern software that allows for a quick and effective response to emerging threats.
According to sources close to the matter, this deal comes within the framework of the ongoing modernization of the Moroccan army, to increase its deterrence capabilities and independence in the field of defense. The first batteries of the “Barak MX” system are planned to be installed in strategic locations, especially along the border areas and at pivot points in Moroccan airspace.
The agreement between Israel and Morocco also includes a knowledge transfer, allowing Moroccan engineers and technicians to receive training in the use and maintenance of this advanced system.
This strategic cooperation places Morocco among the few African countries that possess this advanced technology.
The acquisition of the Barak MX system is intended to address growing security challenges, especially threats related to the widespread use of drones and missiles in modern conflicts.
Diplomatically, this acquisition strengthens relations between Rabat and Tel Aviv, which were renewed in December 2020.
