WATCH: Lebanese president Aoun defends negotiations with Israel

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun delivered a sharp warning against internal destabilization while defending the need for diplomacy, arguing that provoking conflict with Israel would only bring devastation similar to Gaza upon Lebanon.

In an April 5, 2026 interview, Aoun stressed that anyone threatening Lebanon’s civil peace or inciting sectarian tensions is effectively serving Israel’s interests.

He emphasized that maintaining internal stability is a red line, warning that those who violate it will face severe consequences. Aoun also rejected criticism over negotiations with Israel, stating that diplomacy does not equal surrender, but rather a strategic necessity to prevent further destruction.

Addressing critics directly, Aoun questioned the alternative to negotiations, pointing to Gaza as an example of the consequences of prolonged conflict. He argued that while Israel may have intentions toward Lebanon, it is ultimately the responsibility of the Lebanese government to avoid escalation and protect the country from war.

Arabs are in a state of learning Israel’s lessons after 60 years of useless wars. Israel is stronger than Arabs and Muslims. This is a reality, not a bragging.

Arabs should have learned the lessons of 1967’s 6 days war , when armies of 3 ( strong !! ) states smashed in less than a week.

Israel has to end Hizbulla militarily and ideologically, this includes Amal party . Lebanon should never be a nest of yellow jackets wasps again. All of Arabs have to understand the lessons.

Arabs and Muslims have totally lacked enough wisdom to deal with Israel, and to know their real volume and the real power of Israel.

For decades, it was Hizbulla that draws redlines for Lebanese government and beyond. Now, it’s Israel who draws the redlines for both Hizbulla and the Lebanese government.

Israel has no interest in Lebanon as Aoun claims. Arabs thinks that they are the people who can draw redlines. Redlines are drawn by strong people and states, like Israel, not fragile Lebanon.
