The former president of Paraguay, Horacio Cartes, and the current vice president, Hugo Velazquez, have ties to the terrorist organization Hezbollah, the US ambassador to Paraguay, Mark Ostfield, said today during a press conference.
The American diplomat announced on behalf of the United States economic sanctions against Cartes and Válzquez, both of whom were included last year in the list of the most corrupt politicians.
According to Ostfield, Hezbollah regularly held private events in Paraguay, in which the two participated and even made deals to receive favors, sold state contracts without approval and discussed efforts to circumvent the law in exchange for financial bribes, he added.
