A rather stormy Ramadan passes over Malaysia where there is a Muslim majority and a minority of Chinese Malaysians.
It all started when the KK chain of convenience stores, which is one of the largest in the country, announced the sale of socks with the inscription "Allah" on them.
The Muslim majority was not enthusiastic to say the least about the commercial use of God's name and certainly not when it is tied to the feet. The chain is owned by a businessman from the Chinese minority, so the whole thing developed into tension between Muslims and non-Muslims.
Muslim leaders in Malaysia have called for the chain to be boycotted and at least two cases of arson of its branches have been reported in recent days. At the same time, following the calls for a boycott, Muslim leaders began to receive death threats from the Chinese.
The authorities in Malaysia have decided to prosecute the owner of the network and his wife for hurting the feelings of Muslims, but it is doubtful whether this will calm the tension created around the "Allah socks".
