A Friday sermon delivered on January 30, 2020, at the Noor Islamic Cultural Center in Dublin, Ohio, argued that American society is experiencing a deep moral and social collapse and that Islam offers the only real solution.
The sermon was delivered by Khalil Meek, a Texas-based Islamic scholar and activist and the founder and former CEO of the Muslim Legal Fund of America. Meek told congregants that the United States is “leading the world in every problem there is,” pointing to depression, suicide, drug abuse, broken families, racism, and identity confusion as symptoms of what he described as a spiritually hollow society.
According to Meek, these problems stem from a lack of divine guidance, leaving Americans “hungry for the truth.” He asserted that Islam provides purpose, dignity, family honor, hope, and spiritual fulfillment—qualities he claimed are absent from modern American life.
Meek emphasized that dawah, or spreading Islam, is not optional but a responsibility of every Muslim. He framed proselytization as an act of compassion rather than coercion, arguing that withholding Islam from others who are suffering amounts to selfishness or cruelty. He concluded by stating that Americans are actively searching for meaning and stability, and that Islam uniquely fulfills both personal and societal needs.
