A Jewish father and son who left Damascus 30 years ago return, along with a delegation, with the hope that the new regime will fulfill its promise to protect the Jewish community.
For the first time in over 30 years, Rabbi Joseph Hamra and his son Henry visited Damascus to read from a Torah scroll inside a synagogue.
The father and son, who fled Syria in the 1990s, returned following the fall of Bashar al-Assad.
The visit was facilitated by the Syrian Emergency Task Force, and they met with Syria’s caretaker government, which pledged to protect Jewish heritage.
While the Old City’s synagogues remain mostly intact, the historic Jobar Synagogue was reduced to rubble during the Civil War.
The visit stirred emotions, as the Hamra family reflected on the past and the uncertain future of Syria’s Jewish heritage.
