President Trump send his envoy to Belarus, Russia's top ally in the war. Belarus president Lukashenko agrees to Trump’s proposal, frees political prisoners
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko hosted President Donald Trump’s envoy this week, receiving a personal letter from Trump and First Lady Melania that included birthday greetings. According to reports, Lukashenko agreed to Trump’s proposal for a deal that would secure the release of political prisoners in Belarus.
The development stunned observers, as Belarus is a strong ally of Russia and has long resisted Western overtures. Yet the visit produced immediate results: the U.S. Embassy in Lithuania confirmed that the American delegation left Belarus for Vilnius accompanied by 52 freed political prisoners.
In a further sign of progress, Belarusian sources reported that Washington lifted sanctions on Belavia, the country’s national airline. The envoy also informed Lukashenko that the U.S. is interested in reopening its embassy in Minsk, which has been closed for years.
