Egyptian tunnels in the Sinai desert - What are they for?
Over the past decades, Egypt has invested efforts not only in building up its army, but also in the ability to create emergency stocks in the country.

In the area between Cairo and Suez, Egypt has built no less than 20 pairs of wide tunnels that were apparently intended to store weapons, fuel, and food in times of emergency. These are two large and relatively close complexes, each with a large number of openings to underground storage halls.
The complexes are restricted to civilian entry by concrete walls and checkpoints.
Their location on the Cairo-Suez highway indicates the importance of accessibility to them from one of the main arteries in Egypt in times of emergency.
