EXPOSED: Cuba dupes Cubans to fight for Russia in Ukraine

RADIO FREE EUROPE -- Captured by Ukrainian forces, 36-year-old Cuban Frank Dario Jarrosay Manfuga claims he was deceived into joining Russia's military under the pretense of a construction job. Now, he hopes for a way out. His story highlights Cuba’s unexpected role in Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Manfuga is one of an estimated 5,000 Cubans fighting for Russia, according to U.S.-based Cuban Democratic Directorate co-founder Orlando Gutierrez-Boronat.

In a room far behind the front lines in central Ukraine, a Cuban man wearing Russian military fatigues smiles widely as he taps out a rhythm on a table. But his mood soon turns somber.

Frank Dario Jarrosay Manfuga, 36, joined Russia's army in January 2024.
