President Donald Trump says Washington will approve a civilian nuclear agreement with Saudi Arabia only if Riyadh joins the Abraham Accords.
Trump announced that the proposed agreement between the US Department of Energy and Saudi Arabia would cover civilian, nonmilitary nuclear facilities and would prohibit the enrichment of nuclear material inside the kingdom.
However, the president made clear that final US approval is “totally subject” to Saudi Arabia normalizing relations with Israel by joining the Abraham Accords.
The declaration significantly raises the stakes for Riyadh: Access to US civilian nuclear technology would now be directly linked to a historic diplomatic agreement with Israel.
