The New York Times reported Sunday that U.S. military and intelligence officials have detected signs that Iranian-backed militias are preparing to attack American bases in Iraq, and possibly in Syria.
According to the report, the militias’ preparations are believed to be in response to U.S. airstrikes on Saturday night that targeted three Iranian nuclear sites.
The paper noted that “so far, the militias have paused their attacks” and added that “the Iraqi government is working hard to deter militia activity.”
Just days earlier, regional media reported a new round of missile strikes on three American bases in northeastern Syria. The attacks were reportedly carried out by Iranian-backed Iraqi militias, escalating tensions in the area.
