At Iranian diaspora rallies around the world, one name appears again and again: Reza Pahlavi. Sometimes even crowned with the words “King Reza.”
But Reza Pahlavi is not actually the king of Iran.

Reza Pahlavi is the son of Iran’s last Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, whose monarchy ended during the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Since then, Pahlavi has lived in exile and has become one of the most recognizable figures calling for a democratic transition away from the current regime.
