Tehran explores reopening a shipping line to Sudan, raising concerns over covert military and proxy activity.
A so-called Iranian “technical delegation” has arrived at Port Sudan, drawing growing attention over the true purpose of its visit.
The delegation, representing the Iranian shipping line HDS and the Falcon shipping agency, arrived in the Sudanese port city to assess the condition and capabilities of Sudan’s main southern port. Sudan’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport confirmed the visit, stating that the delegation was examining the port’s technical readiness to receive vessels.
According to Sudanese officials, the visit focused on evaluating the port’s operational capacity in preparation for a possible resumption of the Iranian shipping line, which ceased operations in 2018. Members of the delegation reportedly requested the allocation of a dedicated area for maritime transit.
