MUST- READ! Arab Voices: "The 10/7 massacre returned the Jews to the beginning of Zionism"

The following is a translation from Arabic of an article written by Israeli-Arab Mahmoud Abu Rajab, the editor of the newspaper 'Al Akhbar' published in Nazareth

"When the Jews began to follow a life of indulgence and luxury, a pogrom came that woke them up from their sleep and false imaginations of peace with Hamas.

Before they reached the stage where the blindness blinded their eyes, someone came who woke them up from their deep slumber and brought them back to the ground of reality.

Those who believe that the disaster that befell the State of Israel is the beginning of its end are mistaken. This disaster marks, in my opinion, the beginning of a new beginning and it further strengthens my confidence that the Jewish state will not cease to prosper.

This pogrom returned Israel (the Jews) to the starting point, to the beginning of the emergence of Zionism. The reason lies in the fact that 10/7 reminded them of the massacres and disturbances that were their lot in all corners of the world, including in Palestine before the establishment of the state.

The Jews, who until the beginning of the modern era were rooted in a traditional world of faith and observance of mitzvot, found themselves in the past being led like sheep to the slaughter in their settlements. They used to bow their heads, submit to reality, and thank God for the good and the bad. In the calamities they lived and learned about, they saw the decree of God from above.

And of course it never occurred to a believing Jew to ponder after the Creator's decree. This reality of humiliation and danger was their fate until the rise of the Zionist movement, which sought to rescue them from their weakness and helplessness that characterized them and free them from servitude to religion and law, and this by converting the spirit of humiliation and helplessness into a spirit of resistance and rebellion, a spirit of standing firm in the face of challenges, confronting enemies and fierce self-defense and bravely.

Zionism succeeded in planting this spirit in the Jews wherever they lived. Inspired by this new thinking, they began to leave the countries where they lived and immigrate to Israel.

A heroic spirit pulsed among them and they did well to withstand all the disasters that befell them and the difficult challenges they faced. The slogan that was carried in their mouths from then on was "no more", that is - no more massacres from today onwards.

Gone are the days when Jews were slaughtered like sheep, and terrible riots were committed in them, including the killing of men, the rape of women and the slaughter of anyone who could not escape for their lives and hide, just as the Hamas organization did on October 7, 2023.

In the midst of Passover of the year 1903, a pogrom was committed among the Jews of the Ukrainian town of Chisinau, which was then part of the Russian Empire. Dozens of Jews were murdered and hundreds were injured, and more than 700 homes and workplaces were destroyed. Homes and businesses were looted and women were raped. Only one survived. Those who hid in shelters or ran away.

It was the pogrom that motivated Herzl to conceive the idea of establishing a Jewish state in Uganda. For Zaev Jabotinsky, on the other hand, the Chisinau riots were a source of inspiration for the idea of self-defense and the all-out struggle against enemies and harassers.

After the end of the pogrom, which lasted three days, during which the Jews were tormented by all kinds of torture, including acts of abuse, the Jewish Committee in Odessa sent the poet Haim Nachman Bialik to Chisinau to lift their spirits. During his visit there he witnessed the humiliation, weakness and poverty in which the Jews were kept.

The survivors of the inferno went to synagogues to thank God for the miracle that happened to them. The thanksgiving prayer they recited called the "Father of Mercy" was composed after the disturbances by the Crusaders against the Jews in 1096, when the Crusades began and during which tens of thousands of Jews were murdered.

And there is no need to mention the various disturbances caused by Arabs among the Jews of the country: the riots of 1929, in which 133 Jews were murdered; the massacre in Kfar Etzion in 1948, during which a hundred Jews were murdered and the settlement there was completely destroyed.

Now, 75 years have passed since the State of Israel was established, and after it had reached a high level of sophistication, humanity and a developed civilization, the killers of Hamas carried out this massacre.

Some of the state's doomsayers, who constantly prophesy about its destruction and imminent disappearance, saw this as the beginning of the end of the state. In their opinion, this is the time when their vain prophecies about the stone and the tree will come true, and they will open their mouths as the Day of Judgment approaches and say: "O Muslim, here is a Jew hiding behind me, come kill him and drink his blood!".

But the truth is completely different. The Israeli people, in particular the Jews among them, from big to small, woke up as one man, with a spirit of comity and resistance, a spirit of heroism and a firm stand against the enemy pulsating again with greater strength than in 1948 and the wars that followed.

Even if the Jews of the country began to follow a life of indulgence and luxury, this pogrom came and woke them up from their slumber and false imaginations of peace with Hamas.

They are now returning to the spirit of resistance and steadfastness instilled in them by Jabotinsky and others. This spirit of Zionism began to pulsate in them anew after many of the Jews had forgotten it, and it itself began to die and gave way to new "post-Zionist" spirits.

One of the distinct characteristics that the Jewish state is on the rise and prospering is the power of the Hebrew language, which has not stopped developing and thriving in the mouths of young and old, among its sons and even those who are not its sons. In contrast to the Arabic language, which is deteriorating more and more.

About the Jews of his time, al-Hassan bin Khaqan said about 1,200 years ago the poems:

Jews of this time
They reached the end of their hopes and became kings.
The power is in their hands and even the property.
From them came advisers and kings.
Children of Egypt, I advised you: convert!
After all, even the stars of the sky have already converted.

After all, the Jews of our time have not yet reached this mountain, but they are on their way to it.

And before they forget the spirit that blew into them when they founded the state, and before they reach the stage where blindness blinds their eyes, someone comes who wakes them up from their deep slumber and brings them back to the ground of reality.

Interesting article.Taken along with the inability of hamas to enter several religious kibbutzim, maybe it's time to pay more attention to the Almighty.

Arabs always seem to define freedom & justice amongst Jews as "a life of indulgence & luxury." It's interesting Arabs don't define (for example) Qatari excessive luxury & indulgence in the same way.
