Morocco is the first country in the world to purchase the Israeli Barak MX air defense system, which is considered one of the most advanced and effective systems in the field of combating aerial threats.
Morocco began receiving the first shipment of this system in mid-2023, after signing in February 2022 a contract with Israel Aerospace Industries ("Israel Aerospace Industries") worth $500 million. Photos of the various components of the system in Moroccan camouflage appeared on websites specializing in military affairs.
Morocco chose to purchase the Barak MX system from Israel for several reasons, among them:
- The need to strengthen its defense capabilities in light of growing tensions with its neighbor Algeria, which possesses advanced Russian air defense systems, such as the S-300 and S-400.
- The desire to bring Morocco and Israel closer together, which represents a strategic ally of Morocco in the region, which witnessed the normalization of relations between them as part of the Abraham Agreement in 2020.
- Trust in the quality and efficiency of the Israeli military industry, which is considered one of the best in the world in the field of defense technology, and whose products are used in real wars and not just in laboratory experiments.
- Fast delivery of Israel, since only a year and a half passed from the moment of signing the contract to the receipt of the first stage of the order.
Thus, Morocco will obtain an air defense system that puts it in the ranks of developed countries in this field, and provides it with an effective deterrent against any potential threat. This deal confirms the strength and stability of Morocco as Israel's strategic partner in the region, and as a major player in regional and international affairs.
