A letter of protest from Iran's ambassador to the UN to the Security Council following the claims of the Arab League.
Following the Arab League's baseless claims against Iran, Amir Said Irwani, the ambassador and permanent representative of the Islamic Republic to the United Nations, sent a letter to the Security Council.
In this letter it is stated that "Iran once again emphasizes its undisputed sovereignty over the Iranian islands of Abu Musa, Great Tanev and Little Tanev in the Persian Gulf".
Iran also strongly condemns the use of a fictitious name for the Persian Gulf in paragraphs 11 and 16 of the aforementioned statement and considers it unacceptable.
BACKGROUND:
The dispute over the islands of Abu Musa, Greater Tunb (also known as Great Tunb), and Lesser Tunb is a long-standing territorial conflict between Iran and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the Persian Gulf.
Iran seized control of the islands on November 30, 1971
LOCATION AND STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE:
The three islands are located near the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important waterway for oil tanker traffic in the Persian Gulf
