Israel’s alleged airstrikes against Iran-backed militia targets in northern Syria overnight Wednesday were approved by Moscow, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.
Moscow, the Observatory claims, sees these assaults as a significant tool to limit Iran’s involvement in the Middle Eastern state.
The reason for the cooling of relations between the two is unclear. Perhaps the economic goals of each side are clashing, or the growing Iranian proxy-presence in Latakia, where the Russians are located, is causing some tension between the two.
According to the London-based organization, the Israeli attack was directed at military sites that belong to Iranian militias, in particular, the military airports in Al Dabaa and Al-Qusayr near the Homs Governorate.
