Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is calling for “unity and coordination among Islamic countries” as tensions rise with Israel. In a recent phone call with Turkish President Erdoğan, Pezeshkian accused Israel of showing “once again that it has no regard for human rights or international law,” alleging that Israel assassinates civilians, scientists, officials, and military personnel whenever possible.
Pezeshkian claimed Israel’s attacks are timed to derail nuclear negotiations between Iran and the U.S., saying, “This reveals Israel’s intention to sabotage the talks.” He also offered a particularly bold statement, saying: “Iran has always pursued peace and dialogue.”
Erdoğan, for his part, condemned Israel’s strikes, expressed condolences, and claimed that “Netanyahu seeks to ignite the region.” He added that the attacks were partly intended to distract from Israel’s actions in Gaza and reiterated Turkey’s support for a diplomatic solution to Iran’s nuclear issue.
Despite the usual anti-Israel rhetoric, Erdoğan seemed reluctant to offer real assistance. Pezeshkian, a Shiite, reached out to Erdoğan, a Sunni, and received what can best be described as a polite diplomatic brush-off.
