Azerbaijan is emerging as a key member of a growing regional network challenging Iran’s influence and strengthening Israel’s strategic position.
Although Azerbaijan is a Shiite Muslim country, it is secular and maintains close relations with Israel and the US, while viewing Iran with deep suspicion. Since gaining independence in 1991, Azerbaijan has supplied Israel with oil and energy, while Israel has provided advanced technology, intelligence and defense systems.
The partnership has also strengthened Azerbaijan’s military capabilities. Israeli technology played a major role in its victories in Nagorno-Karabakh, and Azerbaijan became one of the earliest buyers of Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system.
This alliance is part of a wider regional transformation. The UAE, Bahrain and Morocco have deepened cooperation with Israel, while Egypt and Jordan remain committed to peace. Saudi Arabia may eventually join a broader Western-oriented coalition based on shared concerns about Iran.
