On the eve of World Suicide Prevention Day, which fell on September 10, a sociology professor announced a "dramatic" increase in the rate of suicides in Iran over the past two decades, and said that according to statistics, in the past two years, an average of 15 people committed suicide every day, in different parts of the country.
On Thursday, September 8, the Iranian Sociological Society held a symposium entitled "Suicide in Iran... Causes and Countermeasures".
The seminar participants revealed statistics on the suicide rate in Iran based on legal data from 2001 to 2019 (for 19 years), and according to these statistics, the suicide rate increased in the last two decades by 44 percent.
"The suicide rate in the country rose from 2.4 in 2001 to 2.6 per 100,000 residents in 2019," said Akbar Alivardi Nia, professor of sociology.
