A Democrat state lawmaker in New York is calling for a coalition of northeast states to secede from the Union and join Canada because President-elect Donald Trump is returning to the White House.

State Senator Liz Krueger (D-28) is advocating for bold ideas, including a proposal to withhold up to $300 billion in federal taxes. In a recent discussion with Politico, Krueger, who chairs the Senate Finance Committee, emphasized the importance of innovative thinking.

In September, she spoke with City and State New York about a hypothetical scenario in which New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Connecticut could secede from the U.S. and join Canada if Trump were to win re-election. While acknowledging that Canada has expressed reluctance to accept such a move, Krueger articulated her desire to remain in the U.S. but suggested that if Trump were to secure a second term, a creative solution might be necessary.

“I love this country, and it wouldn’t be fair to blame the people of New York if Trump wins,” she stated. Krueger proposed that instead of attempting to cross the border illegally, these states could unite to form a new province in Canada. She believes that the progressive values of residents in these states would align well with those of many Canadian officials.

Representing the Upper East Side and Midtown Manhattan, Krueger has discussed her idea with contacts who suggest it could gain traction in Ottawa. “If we were in Europe, our borders would have shifted numerous times in our nation’s history,” she noted.

As Krueger explores these unconventional strategies to counter Trump, the former president has indicated a willingness to collaborate with New York Democrats to enhance the state's standing.
