REPORT: US agent failed in 16-month bid to capture Maduro’s pilot
An AP investigation reveals that a special US federal agent spent 16 months attempting to persuade Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s private pilot, General Bitner Vilgas, to defect and deliver Maduro to US authorities.
The covert plan, launched in April 2024 under President Biden, involved offers of a large cash payment in exchange for landing Maduro at a location where he could be arrested.
The agent reportedly continued pursuing the mission even after his official assignment ended, making another attempt as recently as August.
The operation ultimately failed, highlighting Washington’s ongoing covert efforts against the Venezuelan regime.
